Overview

This is a full-day run from Port Allen aboard a 65-foot, Kauai-built power catamaran, heading first down the coast past Polihale and then across the channel toward Ni'ihau, known as the Forbidden Island. The crossing is the main draw: snorkeling in waters off an island few visitors ever set eyes on. Roughly three hours go to the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park and about three to the Ni'ihau stretch, with the balance spent on the water in between. There is no landing anywhere, everything happens from the boat.

The day starts with breakfast served on board: scrambled eggs, a baker's choice of pastries, fresh fruit, coffee, tea and oatmeal. Lunch is a build-your-own spread with deli meats, cheeses, veggies, pasta salad and cookies. Water, island juices and soft drinks flow all day; beer and wine are poured only after the snorkeling is done. Crew narrate the history and legends of the coast and its people as the cliffs roll by.

Wildlife is a strong part of the appeal. Spinner dolphins, sea turtles, monk seals and manta rays are all possibilities, and humpback whales pass through from December to April. Several reviewers describe monk seals on their trips, along with turtles, rays and sharks. The tour suits travellers with moderate fitness who are comfortable on open ocean, which can be rough. Children must be at least five, and no expectant mothers are permitted.

What To Expect From The Tour

A few practical points shape how this day goes, from the barefoot policy to the ocean conditions.

Common issues. The biggest variable is the ocean: high swells and wind sometimes block the Ni'ihau crossing or close snorkel sites, and the route can change without notice, though weather cancellations come with a reschedule or full refund. The tour is not wheelchair accessible, mobility aids cannot board, and it is not recommended for people with back or joint problems, chronic pain, recent surgery or severe motion sickness. Children under five and expectant mothers cannot join, and non-swimmers may not enter the water. A minimum number of travellers is required, and the operator may cancel if it is not met. One reviewer reported a disorganized start with a mid-trip turnaround, which appears to be a one-off rather than a pattern, but it fits the general theme that this is an adventure where conditions, not a fixed script, drive the day.

Which Tour Matches Your Plans

Is hotel pickup included?

No. Transport to and from the hotel is not included. Check in at Port Allen Marina Center, 4353 Waialo Road in Ele'ele, and use the designated gravel parking lot. The tour ends back at the same point.

What food and drinks are included?

Breakfast and lunch are both included, plus water, island juices, soft drinks and seltzers all day. Beer and wine are served after snorkeling only. Outside alcohol is not permitted under the operator's liquor license.

Is this tour suitable for kids?

Children aged five to twelve pay the child rate, and thirteen and up counts as adult. Anyone younger than five cannot board. Non-swimming children, like non-swimming adults, are not allowed in the water.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancel at least 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the fare is charged in full, and no-shows are charged. Weather cancellations by the operator are fully refundable or can be rescheduled, and the same applies if the minimum traveller count is not met.

What should I bring?

A towel, reef-friendly lotion sunscreen, a light jacket and a camera, plus any daily or prescribed medication such as inhalers or EpiPens, since the tour must be rescheduled without them. The operator also asks guests to bring a reusable water bottle for sustainability reasons.

Are there health restrictions?

Yes. The listing advises against the tour for people with back, neck, knee or hip problems, chronic pain, recent injuries or surgeries, or severe motion sickness, and expectant mothers cannot join. Participants need moderate physical fitness, and the captain has final discretion over boarding in challenging conditions.
